Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Do Tollers require a lot of exercise?
Absolutely. Tollers are high-energy dogs that need regular physical activity and mental challenges to stay happy and healthy. Mental exercise is also as important. They are thinkers and love a good challenge.
Are Tollers good with other pets?
Generally, yes. With proper socialization, Tollers get along well with other dogs and pets, though their prey drive may require supervision around smaller animals. Prey drive is instinctual, but proper introductions at a young age will prevent future issues.
How much grooming does a Toller need?
Tollers have a water-resistant double coat that benefits from regular brushing to minimize shedding and maintain coat health. During shedding seasons, more frequent grooming may be necessary. A Tollers hair will support mats under legs and hair at the back.
Are Tollers easy to train?
They are very intelligent and eager to please, making them highly trainable. However, they respond best to positive reinforcement due to their sensitive natures. They make great service animals!
What health issues are common in Tollers?
Some common concerns include hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), and autoimmune disorders such as IVDD, MRNA, and Addisons. Responsible breeding practices and regular veterinary care can help manage these risks.
You found a dog in need that may be a Toller, now what?
Contact TRI via email at tollerrescueinc@gmail.com or by facebook messenger. Please indicate “URGENT” in the subject line.
What does TRI do after a reporting of a Toller in need?
When notified of a dog in need, regardless of locaiton, TRI will work to relocate the dog to a safe location and develop a plan moving forward. Typical first steps include a trip to the veterinarian’s office to address any medical needs and scan for an ID chip. If the dog was lost, TRI will attempt to locate the dog’s owner. Often, the dog is in a shelter facility. In this case, TRI will attempt to find a suitable foster home where the dog can immediately and safely reside until an adoptive parent is identified. TRI is a rescue organization and does not own a facility that houses animals.
Do you transport?
No, but we can recommend a few transporters we trust with these special dogs.
How do I get or see the dog?
Travel, at your own expense, will be required.
Can I foster before adopting?
Yes. Our fosters get first dibs on the dogs, unless an agreement is different before fostering.
Do I really have to take a dog class?
Yes. Taking a class helps you to bond with your dog. 8 weeks of training is better than 8 years of wishing you had. Just give your dog time to decompress. We are happy to find great trainers near you.
Will you be there to help me with any bad behaviors?
Yes, we will guide you medically, holistically, and with training. The TRI team is with you no matter any obstacles you may experience.
