📌 PINNED POST: QUESTIONS, TRANSPARENCY & THIS ACTIVE RESCUE EFFORT
We are taking time away from rescue work to address something that has become increasingly disruptive. Our unpaid volunteers are spending an inordinate amount of time responding to insinuations disguised as questions across multiple posts, many repeatedly coming from the same small, interconnected group of people.
There is actually a term for this tactic: JAQing — “Just Asking Questions.” It describes introducing a damaging allegation or insinuation in the form of a question, then retreating to “I never accused anyone; I was only asking questions” when challenged. Asking questions is welcome. Using questions to repeatedly plant distrust after answers have already been provided is something very different.
We considered simply deleting these comments. Instead, because that would undoubtedly generate another round of accusations about “secrecy” and “transparency,” we are putting the answers in one pinned post.
1. “WHERE DID THESE DOGS COME FROM?”
We have answered this more than a dozen times, beginning with our very first announcement: these dogs are a VOLUNTARY BREEDER RELEASE from a breeder who is shutting down. We are taking the dogs in waves so each group can be appropriately vetted, evaluated, fostered and placed.
Apparently, that answer isn't sufficient for a small group of people who believe “transparency” requires us to publicly identify the breeder.
It does not.
2. RESCUE 101: WHY WE WILL NOT NAME THE SOURCE OF A VOLUNTARY BREEDER RELEASE
This is not a government seizure. The owner is voluntarily releasing these dogs. Maintaining that cooperation until every dog committed to rescue is safely out matters considerably more to us than satisfying someone's curiosity.
Publicly identifying a surrendering breeder can destroy that relationship and jeopardize access to the remaining dogs. Confidentiality is not secrecy; it is part of maintaining the trust that makes voluntary rescue releases possible. A rescue that agrees to protect a surrendering party's identity and then breaks that agreement for public attention or gossip damages its credibility and can jeopardize future opportunities to help animals.
We have seen what happens when relationships and agreements are not respected, and DC SIR will not operate that way. We keep our word. Our reputation among the people and organizations who entrust dogs to us matters because that trust can determine whether the next dog gets a safe path into rescue.
The breeder's identity is not information we are going to release. Our priority is protecting the dogs, honoring our agreements and preserving future rescue relationships—not satisfying demands for gossip.
This isn't some mysterious policy DC SIR invented for these particular dogs. We have handled breeder and mill releases throughout nearly 14 years of rescue. We also contacted numerous breed-rescue partners experienced with large mill and breeder pulls, and protecting surrender-source information is standard operating procedure for rescues that need to maintain the trust required for future pulls.
Our responsibility is simple: get the dogs safely into rescue. A simple Google search can provide additional perspective: “Why don't animal rescues disclose the names of breeders during voluntary breeder releases?”
3. “WHY HAVEN'T YOU PERSONALLY ANSWERED EVERYONE? THAT'S CONCERNING.”
Because WE ARE UNPAID VOLUNTEERS. We are caring for dogs, cleaning accidents, feeding, training, transporting, scheduling and attending veterinary appointments, conducting adoption calls, checking references, reviewing applications, completing home checks, supporting fosters and adopters, fundraising, maintaining records—and working our actual paying jobs. We're even spending additional administrative hours opening support tickets with Facebook and PayPal trying to determine why some donor information isn't being released to us.
What we cannot do is comb through hundreds of comments across numerous posts and personally type the same answer for every individual when that answer already appears repeatedly on our page. Not receiving an individualized Facebook response from an exhausted volunteer is not evidence of secrecy.
Scroll. The answers are there. Hopefully this pinned post makes them even easier to find.
4. WHEN A “QUESTION” STOPS BEING A QUESTION
This distinction matters. “Where did the dogs come from?” is a question. “Can this rescue properly care for that many dogs without stacking them in crates most of the day?” introduces an accusation of improper care while technically retaining a question mark.
“Why won't you disclose the breeder?” can be a legitimate question. “It would be nice to know where the 60 Shibas are coming from before applying or donating” is something different when we've already explained where the dogs came from and why the surrendering party's identity remains confidential. When the detailed answer is provided and the response simply becomes another argument about our “transparency,” the original question clearly wasn't resolved by receiving its answer.
That is the pattern we are calling out. We have watched a small group repeatedly use words such as “secretive,” “concerning” and “transparency” while declining to acknowledge detailed responses explaining procedures used by rescues that handle these types of pulls. Some have received the explanation multiple times. When challenged about the implications, the retreat becomes: “I was only asking questions.”
Good-faith questions seek information. JAQing uses questions to create suspicion while avoiding ownership of the insinuation. Imagine interacting with someone for the first time and publicly asking questions like:
“You eat fast food every day, don't you? Is that why you look so unhealthy?”
“You look really disheveled. Are you using drugs?”
“Your house looks pretty messy. Do you always neglect your kids like this?”
“Why do you keep changing jobs? Are you just impossible to work with?”
“That car is pretty expensive. Are you living beyond your means?”
“Why are you asking people to donate before giving us every detail? Is this even legitimate?”
“Why should anyone adopt from you when you won't answer the question the way I want?”
See the problem? Every sentence above has a question mark. That doesn't make it a neutral question.
Everyone is welcome to ask genuine questions. What our volunteers will no longer do is spend hours repeatedly defending the organization's integrity against the same insinuations after the underlying questions have already been answered multiple times, all over our page, beginning with the very first post about this pull.
5. WHY THIS PARTICULAR RESCUE EFFORT?
This is perhaps the strangest part. During nearly 14 years of rescue and hundreds of dogs, including numerous breeder and mill releases, we have never experienced this level of scrutiny from this particular group.
Some of these individuals are regarded as knowledgeable or “reputable” within the Shiba community. Yet historically, their interactions with our rescue have overwhelmingly consisted of criticism, corrections and nitpicking rather than encouragement or support. Now several are intensely focused on this particular pull and repeatedly questioning our integrity, transparency and procedures despite receiving detailed responses—some more than three times. It's become Groundhog Day.
Why this group of dogs suddenly generated such extraordinary interest is something readers can decide for themselves. We are not going to speculate about motives we cannot prove. What we can say is that the pattern has become impossible for our volunteers to ignore.
And something else is important here: DC SIR is not perfect. We have changed enormously in 14 years. Amazing Shiba and all-breed rescues have mentored us. Reputable breeders have advised us. Veterinarians, scientists, behavior professionals, food companies, adopters, volunteers and supporters have challenged our thinking and helped improve our policies.
We want constructive questions. We want knowledgeable people to challenge us when doing so helps us provide better care. There is a profound difference between challenging an organization to become better and repeatedly insinuating that an organization cannot be trusted simply to satiate a desire for gossip.
We welcome the former. Our unpaid volunteers are finished spending hours defending themselves against the latter.
6. TO OUR DC SIR COMMUNITY 💙
We hope this post answers the major questions surrounding this rescue effort, and we're asking our supporters to help us keep our volunteers focused on the dogs. That is precisely why this post was scheduled for 2 a.m. We do not want this controversy to become the focus of our page. But we are about to pull another 20 dogs, and we have little doubt these same insinuations will appear again while a small rescue is trying to HELP this breed.
When someone genuinely asks where these dogs came from, why the breeder isn't being identified, how the dogs are being cared for or another question we've already addressed, please kindly direct them here or to the appropriate post. We would rather spend our time on the safety and care of rescued and incoming dogs than repeatedly defending standard rescue procedures against demands for gossip.
Remember that plenty of people discovering this story are completely new to DC SIR. They may see what amounts to Season 3 of this rescue effort without ever having seen Seasons 1 and 2. Give those people grace. We do. We all encounter rescue stories online and immediately wonder what happened before the 30-second reel that caught our attention. When we're genuinely curious, we visit the organization's page and learn the rest of the story.
That's all we're asking here.
We are unpaid volunteers helping a magnificent breed that deserves something remarkably simple: to stop being breeding stock, to become someone's companion, to sleep on a soft bed and to know what it means to have a family.
That is where our time belongs. And that is what we are going to keep doing.

Not the post I had hoped to make, but Charlie is once again looking for his forever home. ❤️
Charlie is a sweet, sweet boy who has made a lot of progress. He does very well with the woman in his current home, gets along well with the other dogs, and does well with other animals. His challenge is that he remains very nervous around the husband in the home, and despite everyone’s efforts, it just isn’t the right fit for him.
Charlie has spent time with a trainer, who felt he was ready to move forward, and in so many ways he is doing beautifully. He simply needs a home that understands that trust may take time, particularly with men.
I absolutely think Charlie could live successfully with a husband-and-wife household. He would just need a patient man who is willing to completely ignore him at first—no pressure, no reaching for him, and no expectations—until Charlie decides he is ready to approach and build that relationship on his own terms.
Charlie loves women, does well with other dogs and animals, and underneath those nervous tendencies is an incredibly sweet boy who deserves to finally find the home where he can relax and feel safe.

These handsome eight-year-old cousins are located in the Fayetteville, Arkansas, area. They have been together since they were puppies and are a deeply bonded pair, so they must be adopted together.
Bear and Panda currently enjoy a spacious fenced-in yard, where they love spending their days, and come inside in the evenings to relax with their family. They are good with cats and have done well with children.
Panda experiences some pain and takes gabapentin, so a home with very young children who may not understand or respect a dog’s boundaries would require careful supervision—or may not be the best fit for him.
Both boys are:
• Up to date on vaccinations
• Heartworm-negative
• Receiving regular flea prevention
• Taking joint supplements
Toller Rescue Inc. is assisting their family with an owner-supported placement. Their current owners will help us choose the perfect family for Bear and Panda, but the adoption will be completed through Toller Rescue Inc.

This morning I woke up feeling grateful.
Many of you know that I serve as the Rescue Coordinator for Toller Rescue Inc. In December 2024, we received a call about six loose Tollers in Okmulgee, Oklahoma. We quickly learned that this wasn’t going to be a simple rescue. The dogs already knew how to avoid traps, and despite everyone’s best efforts, we faced challenge after challenge.
On New Year’s Day, an incredible woman from Tulsa named Tina joined the effort. She has dedicated herself to trapping lost dogs, reuniting them with their families, and helping rescues like ours. She and her husband went above and beyond, even building custom traps that ultimately helped us catch Bonnie and Clyde. It took nearly a year and a half to finally bring Bonnie to safety.
Last week, the final Oklahoma dog went to their forever home, bringing this remarkable chapter to a close.
Along the way, we gained so much more than rescued dogs. We gained friendships, an extended family, and an amazing network of adopters stretching from the Canadian border in Vermont to Rhode Island, Maryland, Northern California, Texas, Kentucky, Tennessee, Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and so many places in between. It has truly been an incredible journey.
I’m especially excited that Tina has graciously accepted the role of TRI Oklahoma. She and her entire family have become such an important part of our rescue, helping with trapping, transporting, and doing whatever was needed. We couldn’t have asked for a better addition to our team.
Today, instead of focusing on all the craziness in the world, I just wanted to focus on gratitude.
Thank you to Sue Jones for inviting me to join this amazing organization. Thank you to Laurel White, who was one of the first people to recognize that Toller Rescue Inc. was needed to help Tollers of unknown origin, mixes and great imposters. Thank you to Tamra for her unwavering dedication as our Treasurer. And thank you to Lily Renee Hamilton, our young Secretary from Wisconsin, who has brought fresh energy, enthusiasm, and new ideas to this wonderful group of “seasoned” rescue ladies.
I also want to extend my heartfelt thanks to every one of our foster homes, trainers, transporters, veterinarians, behavior specialists, and volunteers. You are the ones who help these dogs heal, decompress, learn to trust again, and prepare for their forever homes. This year, we’ve had some particularly challenging dogs who needed months of patience, specialized training, and time to simply decompress before they were ready for adoption. Because of your dedication, those dogs were given the chance they deserved, and their futures are brighter because of you.
Most of all, thank you to every donor, adopter, volunteer, and supporter who has been part of this journey. Rescue is not for the faint of heart. It can be heartbreaking, exhausting, and incredibly frustrating. But it is also one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever had the privilege to be part of.
This morning I simply woke up feeling fulfilled…and very, very grateful.

Dexx is an 8-month-old neutered male who is up to date on all his vaccinations and ready to find the loving family he deserves.
When Dexx first arrived at the shelter, he was very underweight and had clearly not been given the care or love every puppy deserves. Since then, he’s been thriving with good food, attention, and affection—and his sweet personality has absolutely won everyone over. He currently weighs about 38 pounds and appears to be a Toller mix.
Dexx has been at the shelter for a couple of weeks, and he’s quickly become a staff favorite. He’s friendly with other dogs, enjoys people, and is just the sweetest little guy. We aren’t sure how he does with cats yet.
📍 Located in Kentucky, but transport to Pennsylvania can be arranged for the right home.

Gunner is a handsome young boy who, at best, is a Toller mix—but quite likely he’s just a really good look-alike! Whatever his breed mix may be, he’s 100% adorable and full of personality.
At just over one year old, Gunner is looking for an active family who can give him the time, exercise, and attention he deserves.

Gunner is very interested in cats and likes to chase them because he wants to play, not because he wants to hurt them. Unfortunately, some cats don’t appreciate his enthusiasm, so a home without cats—or with very dog-savvy cats and careful introductions—would probably be the best fit.
His family loves him dearly, but changes in work schedules mean Gunner is spending too much time in his crate and not getting the exercise and attention he needs. They’ve made the difficult and loving decision to find him a home where he can truly thrive.
Gunner is a happy, affectionate, energetic young dog who would love a family ready for adventures, walks, games of fetch, and plenty of cuddles.

Wilma is a 10-year-old Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever looking for a very special home.
Sadly, Wilma’s owner recently passed away, and we are working closely with her sister to help this sweet girl find the loving home she deserves.
Wilma is paralyzed in her rear legs, but don’t let that fool you—she still has plenty of love to give. We are currently helping arrange a set of wheels for her so she can enjoy greater mobility and continue to live life to the fullest.
And Wilma’s personality is every bit as wonderful as you could hope for. She loves everyone—kids, cats, dogs, and people of all ages. She is sweet, social, and enjoys being part of the family. If there is love to give, Wilma is ready to receive it and give it right back.
Wilma needs an adopter who is compassionate and committed to her care, including:
* Helping her get in and out of her wheelchair
* Providing any daily assistance she may need
* Making sure she gets appropriate exercise and enrichment
* Giving her the love, patience, and security she deserves
